Korean Films at 61st Cannes Film Festival - Part 2
Korean movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Weird" (shortened: 놈놈놈) directed by Kim Ji Hoon recieved a round of applause at the 61st International Cannes Film Festival. The movie is set in the 1930's with three men hunting each other down for a map stolen from a Japanese official in the Manchurian Desert.
They got remarks, such as, "A fun and surprising movie," by the Venice film critics, followed by "Spectacular movie. Surprisingly well-made despite its commercial limitations. The movie itself is just FUN!" (Variety), receiving international praise.
(The Good: Jung Woo Sung, The Bad: Lee Byung Hun, The Weird: Song Kang Ho)
An American film critic said jokingly," Korean directors should not come to Hollywood. They pull out a spectacle greater than that of Hollywood at a bargain rate of less than a tenth of the average 17 million dollars that Hollywood spends on producing movies. If they come, Hollywood will be in big trouble."
Variety added," A Kimchi western that has brashly wielded a gun at a spaghetti western, it is a completely Korean-styled western movie to look forward to." Comparing the movie to its original 1966 American western counterpart with Clint Eastwood and director Sergio Leone, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", Variety said, " Even though the movie was in its unfinished state, with some CGI effects to be added, its major screening showed that it was impeccable. Although the movie lacks in showing the epic scenary visible in the Leone's original movie, the emotions protrayed by the actors are more intense and raw, and more than make up for this."
On May 25, the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Weird" packed the 3,000 seater Lumiere Theatre. At the end of the movie, the actors Song Kang Ho, Lee Byung Hun, and Jung Woo Sung and director Kim Ji Woon recieved a standing ovation that lasted 10 minutes. In particular, Lee Byung Hun let go of the tears that he could no longer hold back, receiving more applause from the audience.
Song Kang Ho, who made his second trip to Cannes after last year's 'Secret Sunshine', said, "The shower of applause is best at Cannes." They recieved much deserved praise after months of arduous film shooting in the sand storms of China.
Their departure from France was delayed after an outpour of interview requests were made. Congratulations to the actors and director! The movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Weird" will open in theatres in Korea on July 17, 2008.
